May 20, 2020 – Sacramento County Public Health has given Campus the approval to reopen the campus for specific hands-on instruction on a limited basis based on the following plan. This plan was developed in consultation with local health officials and it is imperative that all steps are followed to ensure a safe learning environment for MTI staff and students.
- Instruction that does not require a hands-on component will continue in a remote format until further notice.
- All classrooms have been outfitted with hand sanitizer dispensers, masks have been made available to anyone on campus, and regular disinfection is being conducted by Campus cleaning staff.
- Hands-on instruction will be conducted across Campus' 30 instructional classrooms with occupancy limited to the number that would allow for six feet of distance between participants in each room.
- In instances where social distancing is not possible (such as practicing a blood draw), proper personal protective equipment is required along with personal disinfection before and after the procedure for all participants.
It is our intent to introduce this plan in phases and its implementation will vary depending on each academic program. Specific details and invitations to come to campus will come from your department chair, faculty member, or the Student Services Department. Some programs will continue to function entirely in a remote format at this time. For those coming to campus, you must abide by the strict social distancing and personal hygiene guidelines that we have all grown accustomed to. We are committed to providing high-quality, hands-on instruction to our students in a safe environment and we must all play a part to fulfill that mission. For those concerned about returning to campus due to health or other reasons, we encourage you to seek adjustments to your schedule to enable you to continue with only classes that are being conducted remotely or a temporary leave of absence. May 18, 2020 – With a heavy heart, we have decided to postpone the June 5 commencement ceremony due to the risks associated with COVID-19 and based on guidance from public health officials. Consideration was given to holding the ceremony in a remote format. However, after hosting 59 of these ceremonies since MTI’s founding in 1965, we know that the magic comes from being surrounded by your classmates, instructors, family and friends while you are recognized for your outstanding achievement. With that in mind, we plan to hold a commencement ceremony on October 16 to honor these graduates, so long as it is safe to do so based on guidance from public health officials. More details surrounding this ceremony will be forthcoming as we draw nearer to the date.
May 12, 2020 – Public health officials continue to require colleges to deliver instruction remotely wherever possible due to COVID-19; as such, MTI College will begin the May 26 term in an online fashion similar to the previous term. While the response to our online instruction has been overwhelmingly positive, it is still our goal to have students back on campus as soon as it is safe to do so. In the event we are given such clearance during the May 26 term, some classes may be brought back on campus while others finish out the term online. This decision will be made with the interest of giving students the highest quality learning experience in a safe environment as the top priority.
We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of support and appreciation from students as we have shifted instruction to this remote format. We are thankful for the eagerness and flexibility that students have demonstrated in adapting to these changes and we look forward to having students back on campus as soon as possible!
May 1, 2020 – The CARES Act authorized the creation of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund to provide emergency grants to students who have had their studies affected by COVID-19. This is direct cash aid to students, and we encourage all MTI students to apply.
Students must be currently attending and not on a voluntary leave of absence to receive this award. However, if a student is on a leave and wishes to resume their studies, they can apply for the award and resume attending prior to June 1 and they will receive the award after they resume attendance, so long as all other award requirements are met. NOTE: This application closed May 31.

April 1, 2020 – Campus/MTI College staff and faculty have been working diligently on preparing for the upcoming April 13 term in light of the circumstances surrounding COVID-19. Based on guidance from state and federal governments, we have made the decision to start the April 13 term using online instruction. Delivering high-quality, accessible curriculum while safeguarding the well-being of our students and employees has been at the forefront of those preparations.
We know that everyone is eager to return to campus and resume their studies in their usual fashion. In the meantime, let’s all come together and make the most of the wonderful lessons and learning tools that your faculty members have worked so hard to create. We look forward to seeing students on campus again soon!
March 17, 2020 – Based on guidance received from the Sacramento County Department of Public Health this afternoon, Campus/MTI College has made the decision to suspend on-ground instruction for the rest of the term starting tomorrow, March 18. Our focus during this episode has been on following the guidance of government officials to protect the well-being of our community and doing everything possible to deliver the academic material necessary for our students to earn credit for the work they put in this term and not be unnecessarily penalized or forced to repeat courses due to COVID-19. To that end, many courses that still have outstanding material will have that material delivered in an online format through the end of the term on March 27. For courses where an online format is not feasible, such as clinical healthcare classes, students will be coordinated with on an individual basis to receive credit for their practical skills. It is our commitment to do everything possible to continue to deliver high-quality instruction and opportunities for students to maintain their academic progress. Please contact your instructors and/or department chair for assistance accessing any online material or for any questions regarding the plan to help you successfully complete your courses this term.
March 16, 2020 - Campus/MTI College still does not have any confirmed cases of COVID-19 among staff, faculty or students. Despite that, we still feel that there are adjustments we can make to our operation that will go further than standard precautions without causing significant detriments to student learning or achievement. To that effect, we are providing the following updates:
- Starting Monday, March 23, classes conducted on campus will be suspended through the end of the term. Faculty members are working hard to complete the required on-campus instruction for classes by the end of this week. Depending on the course, some classes will have an online final administered during the week of March 23rd. Spring Break will begin a week early on March 30 and last until April 10. The new term will begin on April 13. Paul Mitchell Students: Starting Monday, March 23, through April 3rd your instruction will be delivered through online lessons via your iPads. Paul Mitchell staff will be assisting you in setting up that access this week. State of California regulations require that only theory hours are awarded for these exercises. We have plans in place to account for this once regular instruction resumes on April 13.
- From now until the end of Spring Break on April 10, the Paul Mitchell service clinic will be closed to guest appointments.
- Graduation, originally scheduled for April 24, has been moved to June 5.
- The Paul Mitchell Hair Show, originally scheduled for April 3, has been moved to September 11.
This is an unprecedented event and all staff and faculty at Campus/MTI College are working tirelessly to ensure that our students continue to receive thorough and high-quality instruction despite these circumstances. We ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this new territory. Our focus on the physical well-being and educational enrichment of our students remains steadfast.

March 12, 2020 - As of today, we continue to have no confirmed cases of students or employees with the coronavirus (COVID-19) within the MTI College community. We have continued to follow the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health, and the Sacramento County Department of Health Services. To that effect, the campus continues to be regularly cleaned and sanitized with materials rated for use against COVID-19 and individuals who are feeling ill have been asked to stay home. As a reminder, MTI College stands ready to assist those individuals in any way possible to ensure that absence has a minimal effect on their academic progress. MTI College will continue to stay apprised of and follow the CDC’s guidelines for institutions that do not have a confirmed COVID-19 case within their community.
As noted in the prior update, Campus/MTI College is approaching this situation in phases and is developing contingencies for a variety of circumstances that may come about in the future. We have received numerous responses from students concerned that their classes will be cancelled or otherwise adversely affected by this incident. Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to ensure your learning experience continues to be of the high quality you expect from MTI College while maintaining a safe environment. Our sincerest thanks to those individuals that have taken heightened hygiene and cleanliness measures to heart. Your efforts help keep MTI College safe.
The County of Sacramento has issued new guidance regarding their measures to combat COVID-19. The following excerpts were taken directly from their guidance.
Quarantine: With the shift from containment to mitigation, it is no longer necessary for someone who has been in contact with someone with COVID-19 to quarantine for 14 days. This applies to the general public, as well as health care workers and first responders. However, if they develop respiratory symptoms, they should stay home in order to protect those who are well.
Sick Persons:
- People should stay home if they are sick.
- Those with cold-like symptoms who can manage their symptoms at home with over-the-counter drugs should do so, regardless of whether they have a cold, the flu, or COVID-19.
- If, however, difficulty breathing and lethargy develops, or symptoms were better and then got worse, they should call their healthcare provider, or urgent care center ahead so they can prepare to take care of them.
- People should only call 911 or go to an emergency department if they believe that they are extremely sick or their life is in imminent danger. Other emergencies are still occurring, and emergency resources must be available to address all of them, not just COVID-19
Vulnerable Populations: People at higher risk should consider staying home and away from crowded social gatherings where people are within arm’s length, such as parades, conferences, sporting events and concerts.
- Age: Risk of severe disease from COVID-19 escalates as age increases. Persons over age 80 are in the highest risk category.
- Underlying Conditions: People with chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, heart disease, or lung diseases such as COPD, as well as those with severely weakened immune systems are at high risk of complications.
If you feel that you or a member of your household are a member of a vulnerable population, you may wish to consider taking a temporary leave of absence from your studies. The College is ready to assist you in facilitating this leave and your eventual return. All of us at MTI College understand that this issue is cause for concern to many. Rest assured that as circumstances continue to develop, one thing will remain the same: We will make our decisions with the health and well-being of our students, staff and faculty as our top priority. March 2, 2020 - MTI College is closely monitoring the emerging public health issue regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The College is staying current with information provided by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health and the Sacramento County Department of Health Services.
Our goal is to provide relevant communication on this matter as necessary, while following the precautions outlined by these health departments. Furthermore, the College is approaching the situation in phases. Currently, there are no known cases of infection or exposure to the virus within the campus community. As such, we are currently in a phase of preparation in the event of exposure to our community, and prevention to reduce that risk of exposure.
Face Masks
At this point in time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is not recommending that uninfected individuals wear face masks to limit exposure to disease. However, out of an abundance of caution, the College has increased its supply of masks and will have them available to all students, faculty, and staff upon request. Please see your department chair to obtain a mask. The global availability of masks is low, so please limit your request to one mask at this time.
Disinfection
The campus is regularly cleaned by the janitorial staff. In addition to this cleaning, members of the Technical Services and Healthcare departments are routinely disinfecting common areas with sterilizing wipes that are rated for use against COVID-19.
Individual Precautions
It is important that all members of our community are making a conscious effort to follow these guidelines from the CDC to help prevent the spread of disease:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
Staying Home
The most important means of preventing the spread of disease is to STAY HOME if you are feeling ill. No matter how insignificant you feel your symptoms are, it is imperative that you stay home and seek medical care until you have been cleared to return to school by a physician. If you do not have a primary care provider, there are local facilities that offer low or no cost primary care and behavioral health services to individuals that qualify. We understand the concerns associated with missing work or class time, but, above all else, preventing the spread of infection must be our top priority. With that in mind, MTI College is committed to providing opportunities to those who miss class time due to illness with the resources and information necessary to stay current in their studies. Since the appropriate remedies will vary depending on the courses an individual student is enrolled in, students missing class should contact the Dean of Students, Angela Pesce, to coordinate a plan with their department chair to maintain their class progress during their absence. We will continue to closely monitor the health of all community members and follow the guidelines provided by federal, state, and local authorities. As mentioned above, we are approaching this incident in phases and a campus closure is not being considered at this time. While other private or public colleges may be considering this option, each college’s circumstances are unique and given what is known at this time, we strongly believe suspending classes at MTI would be premature and not in the best interest of those we serve. As the situation develops and new guidance becomes available from state and federal agencies, we will adjust our tactics accordingly and communicate them to the campus community.
