Starting a new career is exciting. But it can also be stressful. There is an array of careers to choose from and you must consider the best options for you and be prepared for the journey you will take. It will probably require some dedication and time, in order to start something new.

Conducting research on potential careers, and what tasks you like to do can guarantee success and help you avoid embarking on a career that is not suitable for you. And most importantly, it can guarantee you job satisfaction. And that’s what everybody is looking for.

A job as a paralegal might have never crossed your mind, but if you are a person who enjoys researching, analyzing documents and facts, using the computer, and if you have great organizational skills, looking into a career as a paralegal is worth your time.

What exactly does a paralegal do?

Paralegals assist lawyers in their daily tasks. Because paralegals don’t have to pass the bar, as lawyers do, they have a shorter and quicker path to a job in the legal field. According to O*NET OnLine, common tasks for paralegals include preparing legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, appeals, wills, contracts, and real estate closing statements; meeting with clients and other professionals to discuss details of their cases; preparing for trial by performing tasks such as organizing exhibits; preparing affidavits or other documents, such as legal correspondence, and organizing and maintaining documents in a paper or electronic filing system; and investigating facts and law of cases and searching pertinent sources, such as public records, to determine causes of action and to prepare cases.

Things to consider before starting

A career as a paralegal brings many benefits. A common question that Sacramento trade schools receive is: Why should I go to a trade school when I can get on-the-job training with a future employer? To summarize that answer, trade schools offer valuable skills training that may not be as comprehensive as the basic job training workers would receive at the work place. To unpack that a little more, here are some of the main reasons why workers should consider trade school programs instead of placing their hopes in on-the-job training.

Evaluating Job Candidates

Even before applicants get the job, they have to prove to prospective employers that they are both motivated and capable of performing well in the position they are being considered for. Attending a trade school program for a specific field or career demonstrates that they are already invested in the position and that they possess a set of skills applicable to the work they will be doing.

Relevant Skills Certification

Certification is one of the main goals of high-quality Northern California career training colleges, and certification in a relevant field shows that a job candidate has demonstrated a certain level of competency. A study by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce went a step further and found that certificate holders earn 20% more than workers with only a high school diploma. Those who hold certificates in their field have nearly the same salaries as workers with associate’s degrees, and 23% of certificate holders reported that they earned more than the average worker with a four-year degree.

Trade School Career Assistance

Trade schools want their students to succeed, so many offer professional services to help students in their job hunt. Career counselors will help students and program graduates develop their resume, prepare for interviews, and provide them with more job hunting resources. Schools may have connections with regional businesses and may be able to help students get placed at those firms. They may also refer high-achieving students to recruiters and employers who come to the school looking for potential job candidates.

Employers may be reluctant to hire candidates that will require significant on-the-job training because it represents a loss to the company. The more time a business spends training employees to be able to perform basic tasks, the less benefit they ultimately gain from the employee. On the other hand, candidates who have received prior training for the position they are applying for will likely transition more easily into their new career. Their training may progress more quickly, and they may be able to move onto advanced tasks sooner, adding more value to their overall contributions.

Workers across the nation have new reason to celebrate the recovering economy. Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce working together with Georgetown Public Policy Institute have projected that there will by 55 million job openings emerging over the course of this decade. Of these, 24 million will result from new job creation and 31 million positions will need to be filled to replace retiring baby boomers.

Educational Predictions for New Job Openings

The study found that 80% of jobs will require more education than a high school diploma, with the highest demand for postsecondary education in the fields of healthcare, IT, and government. Approximately 5 million jobs will require a postsecondary certificate, such as technical school training certification. However, under the current education system, the supply of postsecondary-educated workers will fall 5 million short by 2020. Many colleges across the country already expect drops in enrollment, largely due to the burden of high tuition rates for undergraduate and graduate education. On the other hand, just last year trade schools reported a boom in student enrollment as more students sought career training to prepare for specific jobs.

In-Demand Career Skills

The Georgetown study also looked into what qualities employers would be looking for in future positions. Employers and hiring managers will pay special attention to leadership, communication, analytics, and administrative qualities in their job candidates. Many of these professional skills are not taught as part of the curriculum in university programs, but they remain a core component of technical colleges, which specifically prepare students for transitioning smoothly into the workplace.

Changes in Job Market Demographics

Earlier projections reported that in 19 states at least 65% (the national average) of new jobs would require some level of postsecondary education by 2018. This new study places that figure at 32 states and the District of Columbia. The same research predicts that the Northeast will require the highest levels of postsecondary education, and the highest concentration of jobs for high school graduates and drop-outs will be in the South.

Career Training for Growing Industries

As the world changes, cued by new technology, shifts in consumer preferences, and developments in international economic relations, the job market is immediately affected. Trade schools follow market changes closely, making adjustments to course material and program offerings to reflect qualities and skills that employers are looking for in potential job candidates.

Graduating with Career-Ready skills is becoming more and more necessary

All to often, those who have received a BA or a BS degree graduate and find themselves waiting tables or doing other menial jobs that have nothing to do with their major. This is mostly because, although four year college offer a well-rounded education, they do not necessarily ever teach the practical skills that business’s want new hires to know. Bachelor’s Degree holders have learned theory, but must often be trained in practice on the job, a task which fewer and fewer employers are able to afford.

Job training programs from a vocational school, career college, or technical school eliminate the disconnect between school and work. Graduates with an Associate’s degree in health care support in fields such as billing and coding, medical assisting and Phlebotomy, for example, are already completely equipped to begin fulfilling careers in those areas. They need very little on the job training and can begin becoming an asset to the company that hired them very quickly. This quick return on investment is exactly what employers are looking for at a time when profits are down, and business is unstable.

More than two months into 2011, it remains a rough ride for many Sacramento-area job seekers.

But a local career college is reporting an increase in job placements – a small but welcome sign of hiring activity in the region.

MTI College in Sacramento has seen placements rise from 18 in September 2010 to 44 in February, with employers selecting graduates for positions in information technology, health care and other fields, say campus officials.

After an incremental gain in October, November placements rose to 37. The totals fell slightly in December and January before rising again in February.

“We’re thrilled to see things picking up – tech, paralegal, health care, general business – all across the board,” said MTI College President John Zimmerman.

“It’s not great, but it is good,” Zimmerman said of the numbers. “We’ve seen tough times. This is one of the worst,” he said.

It remains an employers’ market, said Toni Lewis, an MTI career services coordinator. Lewis included medical billers, accounting technicians and other office positions
among those in employers’ hiring plans. “They’re looking for a good amount of work history and someone who can transition easily” from task to task, she said. “Employers are looking
for the most qualified people and they’re going to be picky.”

But “the numbers tend to say (employers) are doing some hiring,” Lewis said.

Zimmerman said the increased placements are encouraging because the students were mostly displaced workers who had enrolled at the school to pick up new skills or strengthen current ones to bolster their job search.
